Comic Market (コミックマーケット Comikku Māketto), universally called Comiket, is the biggest doujin (self-published) convention. Held twice yearly at Tokyo Big Sight, Winter Comiket draws 500,000+ attendees over three days.
What It Is
Comiket is primarily a marketplace where amateur and professional creators sell self-published manga, art books, music, and games. Major publishers also distribute exclusive merchandise and preview goods.
Getting There
Tokyo Big Sight (東京ビッグサイト) in Ariake. Take the Yurikamome line from Shimbashi to Kokusai-Tenjijo-Seimon Station, or the Rinkai Line to Kokusai-Tenjijo Station.
What to Expect
- Crowds: Day 1 and 2 are heavy but manageable. Day 3 is the chaos day (popular circles).
- Catalog: Download the Comiket official app or buy the paper catalog (¥2,500). Essential for planning your route.
- Circles: Nearly every notable doujin artist is here. Follow circle Twitter accounts beforehand for locations.
- Corporate booths: Major publishers (Kadokawa, Shueisha) sell exclusive merch.
- Cosplay: Dedicated cosplay area is in the outdoor plaza (registration required).
Survival Tips
- Arrive before 9:00: The queue starts forming at 6:00. Doors open around 10:00.
- Bring cash: Most circles are cash-only. ATMs at Big Sight have long lines.
- Hydrate: It gets hot inside, even in winter. Water fountains exist but bring a bottle.
- Bag: Bring a sturdy tote or suitcase. You will buy more than expected.
- Exit strategy: Taxi queue is 30–60 minutes. Yurikamome line is packed. Walk to Kokusai-Tenjijo or take the shuttle bus to Shinonome Station instead.
