Tsuyu (梅雨) — the rainy season — runs from early June to mid-July in Tokyo. It’s humid, overcast, and intermittent. But it’s also the perfect excuse for indoor otaku activities.
The Tsuyu Experience
Rain falls in cycles: a few days of steady rain, followed by muggy overcast, then more rain. Temperatures hover at 22–28°C with 80%+ humidity. Umbrellas are mandatory; a compact folding one fits in any bag.
Best Indoor Otaku Activities
Manga Cafes — A rainy day at a manga cafe is peak Tokyo. Chains like Manboo! and Comic Box offer drink bars, private booths, and thousands of volumes. Rates: ¥400–500/hour, with overnight packages available.
Animate Ikebukuro — Tokyo’s main Animate store. Eight floors of merchandise across from Ikebukuro Station. You can spend 2+ hours here and barely scratch the surface.
Nakano Broadway — The covered shopping arcade means you never need to step outside. Full day of browsing Mandarake, K-Books, and figure shops under one roof.
Arcades — Rainy weekends are prime arcade time. Game centers are less crowded (casual players stay home), so serious sessions are easier.
Ghibli Museum (Mitaka) — Book tickets well in advance (they sell out months ahead), but a rainy visit adds atmospheric mood to the indoor-exhibition-focused museum.
Akihabara Radio Kaikan — Fully indoors, connected to the station, and dense enough to occupy an entire rainy afternoon.
