Lucky Bags (福袋 fukubukuro)
Major electronics and anime retailers release fukubukuro — mystery bags packed with surplus or promotional stock at a fraction of the usual price. Yodobashi Camera Akiba and Sofmap typically open early on January 2 for this. Bag contents range from PC peripherals and figures to gacha capsule bundles.
Vocab: 福袋 fukubukuro — “lucky bag.” A New Year tradition where shops sell sealed bags of random merchandise at a discount. You don’t know what’s inside, but the value always exceeds the price.
Kanda Shrine (神田明神)
A 10-minute walk from Akihabara Station, Kanda Shrine draws tech workers and otaku for hatsumōde (first shrine visit of the year). The shrine sells unique omamori (charms) themed around anime and electronics — you’ll find EVA-styled luck charms and circuit-board ema (votive plaques).
Akihabara Radio Kaikan
The white building reopens on January 2 with most stores operating. It’s the most reliable spot for New Year shopping, with Mandarake’s basement floors offering bargain hunting on manga and figures.

- Jan 1 — Most major stores closed. Shrine visits, street photography, and department store basement floors (depachika) are the main draws.
- Jan 2–3 — Normal business resumes. Expect crowds at Yodobashi, Sofmap, and Animate.
- Weather — Cold, 5–10°C. Indoor shopping is comfortable.
