January in Tokyo is post-holiday recovery, but there’s still plenty for otaku culture enthusiasts.
This Month’s Highlights
Akihabara New Year Sales — Most major electronics and anime stores run clearance and lucky bag sales through January 5–7. The Radio Kaikan branches of Mandarake have Comiket carryover stock at reduced prices.
Hatsumōde Season — Continues through January 7. Kanda Myojin near Akihabara remains busy, and their otaku-themed omamori (including EVA and anime designs) sell well.
Winter Comiket After-Market — Major resellers consolidate unsold Comiket stock throughout January. Mandarake Akiba and Nakano Broadway list new Comiket arrivals around mid-month.
