August is when Tokyo’s summer hits its stride. The rainy season is a distant memory, school holidays are in full swing, and the city comes alive with evening festivals, fireworks, and special events. This year has some particularly exciting additions to the calendar.

Tokyo Starry Sky and Light Summer Festival 2026

The biggest newcomer this summer is 「東京 星空と光の夏祭り 2026」 (Tokyo Starry Sky and Light Summer Festival 2026), a brand-new night entertainment event at Showa Kinen Park (国営昭和記念公園) in Tachikawa. Running for nine nights from August 8 (Sat) to August 16 (Sun), this is the first event of its kind at the park.

Here is what you can expect:

  • 500-drone show — Choreographed by Redcliff, the company behind the Osaka Expo drone displays, these 500 drones will paint light stories across the Tachikawa night sky.
  • Fireworks — A musical firework display timed to the drone show.
  • LED Lantern floating — You can participate in releasing illuminated lanterns into the night sky.
  • Giant Keyaki illumination — The park’s iconic 20m-tall, century-old zelkova tree gets a magical light makeover.
  • Stage programs — Live music and performances at the特設ステージ (special stage).
  • Food trucks — Over 10 kitchen cars serving summer festival fare.
  • Handheld fireworks area — Bring your own 手持ち花火 (teuchi hanabi) and enjoy them safely in a designated zone.

Tickets are on sale now via Asoview! and Ticket Pia. Admission is free for children 3 and under. The park is about a 10-minute walk from JR Tachikawa Station.

This event is a fantastic option if you want a true summer night experience without the insane crowds of central Tokyo fireworks displays.

Roppongi Hills Bon Odori 2026

A summer staple that has been running for over 20 years, the 六本木ヒルズ盆踊り2026 (Roppongi Hills Bon Odori 2026) returns from August 21 (Fri) to August 23 (Sun). This is one of Tokyo’s largest bon odori events, set in the stylish surroundings of Roppongi Hills.

The schedule breaks down like this:

  • Friday Aug 21 (前夜祭/pre-festival): Food stalls open from 17:00, plus a special musical performance from 19:00 (no bon odori on Friday).
  • Saturday Aug 22 & Sunday Aug 23: Food stalls from 15:00, bon odori dancing from 17:00 to 20:00.

A large yagura (stage tower) is set up in the center of Roppongi Hills Arena, and everyone is welcome to join the circle and dance. Food stalls from famous restaurants line the venue, and parts of Keyakizaka Street are closed off for kids’ water play areas and kitchen cars. Admission is free — just show up and join in.

Sanrio Happi Danbu Summer Event at Tokyo Solamachi

For Sanrio fans, 「はぴだんぶい Voyage 全力なつやすみ 2026」 is running from August 17 (Mon) to August 30 (Sun) around Tokyo Solamachi (next to Skytree). This event features the “Happi-danbu” crew — Pochacco, Tuxedo Sam, Hangyodon, and other popular Sanrio characters — in a digital stamp rally that takes you through Solamachi and the adjacent Mizumachi area.

It is a great way to explore the area around Tokyo Skytree, and the indoor routing means you stay cool while hunting for stamps. While you are in the area, the Skytree’s own summer event 「涼空の絶景」 (Cool Sky View) is running now through September 9, with limited-edition goldfish jelly sodas and summer-themed menu items at the observation deck cafe.

  • Anime Tokyo Station Summer Festival — Running through August 30 at アニメ東京ステーション in Ikebukuro. Free anime screenings, kids workshops, and original uchiwa fans for visitors. A 4-minute walk from Ikebukuro Station.
