If you blinked through August 1, you missed the Edogawa (14,000 shells) and Itabashi (15,000 shells) fireworks that opened the month 空花火. Do not worry: the rest of August is loaded. Four dates matter, in order: Jingu Gaien fireworks on August 8, Koto fireworks on the August 11 holiday, the 60th Azabu-Juban Noryo Matsuri on August 22-23, and Hatsune Miku’s Magical Mirai on the final weekend.

August 8: Jingu Gaien Fireworks

The 45th 神宮外苑花火大会 (Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival) runs Saturday August 8, with 10,000 shells launched from Jingu’s soft-ball baseball stadium between 19:30 and 20:30 and August 9 as the rain date 公式サイト. It is half concert, half fireworks: Jingu Stadium opens at 16:00 with live acts from 17:00, and Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium starts even earlier, so most people buy stadium seats 公式サイト.

The free option still exists, but it needs a reservation this year. August 22-23: The 60th Azabu-Juban Noryo Matsuri

納涼 (noryo) means cooling off in the evening breeze, and the 麻布十番納涼まつり is the shopping street’s own summer festival, going back more than 50 years GO TOKYO. The 60th edition runs Saturday August 22 and Sunday August 23, 15:00 to 21:00 GO TOKYO 港区観光協会. Long-established shops and trendy names set up stalls, the おらがくに自慢 (oregakuni jiman, “hometown pride”) market brings regional specialties from around Japan, and there is 納涼寄席 (noryo yose) summer comedy plus the 10-BANG stage GO TOKYO. Two practical notes.
